Diary (1 Jan. 1776-2 Mar. 1789) of William Pynchon, a lawyer from Salem, Mass. The entries note current news of the Revolution as it is heard by Pynchon, his loyalist leanings and his treatment as a result, his contact with other loyalists both in and out of the country, and economic effects of the war on his business and the Salem economy (including some current prices). Other entries note the daily life and the people of Salem, weather, his law practice and cases, Shays' Rebellion, the formation and ratification of the Constitution, and local and national politics from his perspective as a Federalist after the war. A gap in the diary exists from 1779 to 2 May 1780.
